We believe in open science. This is why we make our products (logbooks, manuals, technical reports, research, and data) available. Sharing these elements with fishers and the scientific community fosters collaboration, promotes the exchange of knowledge, and ultimately advances science and the conservation of the giant sea bass.
Searching for the Giants of the Kelp Forest in Mexican Waters:
the Giant Sea Bass
Our story in the Mediterranews bulletin by Terra Peninsular tells a story about Giant Sea Bass in Baja California, its importance to fisheries and local ecosystems, and the challenges of studying one of the top predators in Mexican kelp forests.

Manual
The manual contains protocols and guidelines on how to sample and manage the samples. This manual is used by our partners from fishing communities to standardize sampling methods across sites. It specifies how to complete the data logbook (below), extract tissue samples for genetic analysis. It also explains how to obtain gonad samples to determine fecundity and otholits to determine age at length.

Data Logbook
This is the format we -and our partners- use to collect information on the field. It allows us to obtain information about the fish, like its weight and length. But it also provides us with an opportunity to know more about where and how it was fished, and how the giant sea bass fishery interacts with other fisheries.

Technical sheetThis is a summarized version of our manual. When sampling, one might forget to take a sample or write down important information. Therefore, we use this simple 6 step process to make sure we obtain all information for every organism. On the back, it includes information on how to fill in the data logbooks.
